More than a screenshot beautifier
More than a screenshot beautifier
Achu is a free, open-source desktop application for Windows, macOS, and Linux that transforms raw screenshots into polished visual assets. Its primary function is to capture and beautify screenshots, storing them in a local gallery, while also enabling privacy redaction, optical character recognition (OCR), and AI-assisted bug reporting. The application operates fully on the local machine; data does not leave the computer unless the user explicitly configures and approves an external AI service for generating bug reports. Key features include a built-in screenshot beautification tool that applies consistent styling, a local gallery for organizing and managing captures, on-device privacy scanning and redaction of sensitive information, and an Issue Agent that can draft GitHub bug reports using AI. The OCR capability extracts text from screenshots for searching or copying. All beautification, storage, privacy scanning, and OCR processes run locally. The optional AI bug report feature only contacts cloud APIs when the user sets up an external provider and manually approves the generated issue. Typical use cases involve developers and designers creating share-ready visuals from screenshots, teams managing and annotating screen captures for documentation or feedback, and users needing to sanitize images before sharing. The workflow generally starts with capturing a screenshot, then editing and beautifying it within the application, saving it to the local gallery, and optionally generating a bug report from the captured content. The gallery allows browsing thumbnails, reopening images in the editor, and managing files on disk. The default storage folder is ~/achu-screenshots, which can be changed in settings. Deletions are soft; files move to a .achu-trash subfolder and are automatically removed after 30 days. Achu is distributed under the MIT License and can be downloaded from GitHub Releases. It is designed to be lightweight and secure, running entirely on the user’s machine without sending data elsewhere unless explicitly authorized. The application supports cross-platform use and offers a straightforward, locally controlled experience for screenshot management and enhancement.
