Language buddy chat + anki cards
Ajak is a language assistance application designed for immigrants who need contextual help with a new language. Its primary function is to explain words and phrases in the user’s preferred language, going beyond direct translation. Instead of providing a single word equivalent, Ajak offers explanations of meaning, context, and appropriate usage, similar to advice from a local friend. The service is accessible through a web browser and Telegram, with additional platforms planned. Users can send a word, a sentence from a book, a joke, or a news headline, and receive an answer in seconds that clarifies what it means and how to use it. The application includes several practical features. Users can choose which language they need help with and which language Ajak should answer in, a preference set once and remembered to avoid extra taps. Ajak provides guidance on social register, indicating whether a word or phrase is slang, casual, or polite and with whom it can be used. Answers can be saved to cards for later review, with an optional system that archives known items and brings back others for reinforcement. There are no tasks or reminders; users simply ask a question or write one word. Typical use cases include reading official letters, understanding conversations at the doctor or in shops, navigating work chats, and interpreting lines from media. The workflow is straightforward: the user signs in with Google, asks a question in a chat, and the answer appears in the conversation. All interactions are consolidated in the Ajak app. The name is derived from the Belarusian phrase “A jak,” which translates roughly to “And how?” or “What?” reflecting the app’s purpose of clarifying unfamiliar expressions.
