Aside is a note-taking application for Windows that operates as a frameless window designed to appear and disappear quickly. Its primary function is to capture temporary thoughts, such as a phone number received during a call or a task that arises while working on something else, without disrupting the user’s current workflow. The window slides up from a corner of the screen, allows the user to type a note, and then vanishes, returning the cursor to its previous location. Notes are intended to be temporary: the workflow encourages dumping a thought, acting on it, and deleting the note. The application supports Markdown formatting rendered in real time, including headings, bullets with three indent levels, numbered lists, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, and interactive checklists. Formatting markers remain hidden until the caret is inside the relevant text. Pasting content from other sources strips formatting automatically. A built-in Pomodoro timer can be triggered by typing “timer study” in any note and pressing Enter, defaulting to 55 minutes on and 5 minutes off; when the timer ends, the window reappears with a border pulse and soft chime even if it was hidden. Notes are organized as a carousel of up to 20 items, navigated via Ctrl+Left/Right arrow keys, a two-finger swipe, or a hover table of contents. A search function (Ctrl+F) scans all notes and displays context around each match, allowing the user to click and jump to the relevant note. The window can be positioned in nine preset locations (corners, center, halves, thirds), each assignable to its own global hotkey, or the user can hold Ctrl and drag the window to any custom position. The application supports two theme modes (light and dark) with per-note tint colors, transparency, background patterns, and adjustable font size, all accessible from a compact overlay. The entire note area takes on the chosen color, providing a visual cue for note identification. The beta version is currently free for a limited time, and early users are encouraged to report bugs and suggest future features. The application is available at setaside.dev.
