Speak, and it’s wrıtten.
Jot Transcribe is a free dictation application for Mac and iPhone that converts spoken words into text entirely on the device. The app operates without any cloud processing, account creation, or subscription fees. Users press a configurable hotkey, speak naturally, and the transcribed text appears at the current cursor position in any application. The software supports both toggle mode and push-to-talk mode, has no length limit on dictation sessions, and allows users to cancel input at any time by pressing the escape key. The application runs completely on the local device, meaning voice data never leaves the Mac or iPhone. An optional AI cleanup feature also processes text on-device, with any cloud-based functionality being strictly opt-in. Jot Transcribe is open source, allowing users to inspect the code for transparency. On Mac, a setup wizard guides users through granting permissions, downloading the speech recognition model, and performing a test dictation. On iPhone, the app functions as a custom keyboard that can be enabled and used to dictate into any other app. Typical use cases include hands-free text entry for writing, note-taking, coding, or filling out forms across different applications. The workflow involves setting a hotkey, pressing it to begin dictation, speaking the desired text, and then having the transcribed words automatically pasted at the cursor location. The app is designed as a lightweight alternative to subscription-based dictation services that send voice data to remote servers. It was created by developer Vineet Sriram.
