Meet nearby people in real life
Loonies is a Danish hyperlocal mobile application designed to facilitate spontaneous, platonic in-person meetings between people in close physical proximity. The app does not function as a dating platform or a social media feed. Instead, it allows users to indicate their availability for a brief social interaction, such as a coffee or a walk, within a limited time window. The service is currently in beta testing, beginning in the area around Grønttorvet in Copenhagen, and is available on both iPhone and Android devices. The core workflow of Loonies is structured around short, intentional sessions. A user goes online by selecting an activity (for example, coffee or a walk) and setting a visibility period of 15 to 60 minutes. During this time, other users in the vicinity can see an approximate distance to the user and send a ping to express interest. The ping does not open a direct chat; the recipient must accept the ping to initiate a conversation. Once a chat is opened, the two users can arrange to meet at a public location. After an agreement is made, the app is intended to be put away, with the rest of the interaction occurring offline. To use Loonies, a user must create a profile that includes a photo and a phone number. Other users see only an approximate distance, not an exact location. The app provides controls for safety and privacy: users can block a profile, report a person or conversation, and choose to accept, decline, or ignore incoming pings. The app is not a continuous social network; a user is only visible to others when they actively go online for a session. The design emphasizes low friction and minimal screen time, with the goal of enabling real world encounters that might otherwise not happen.
