Mundu.app is a web-based application that transforms the planet into an interactive three-dimensional atlas. Its primary function is to allow users to explore Earth through a photorealistic 3D globe, discover notable places around any chosen location, and access related information from Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. The application runs entirely in a browser as a Progressive Web App, requiring no download from an app store, and can be installed on a device’s home screen for full-screen use and offline access. The globe is rendered with GPU-shaded mountain relief derived from NASA elevation data, precise vector coastlines, and thousands of islands and cities that become visible as the user zooms in. Users can spin the globe, drop a base point anywhere on the surface, and tap “Explore here” to query Wikidata for every notable place in the vicinity. Results include castles, cathedrals, volcanoes, glaciers, beaches, historical battlefields, and other landmarks. Each place opens a gallery of images from Wikimedia Commons and the full Wikipedia article, with automatic language switching based on the user’s browser language and an English fallback. Discovered places are automatically collected into a personal Archive, which organizes entries by category and century along a color-coded timeline. Users can star articles to pin them, and any article can be tapped to fly the globe directly to its geographic location. Typical use cases include educational exploration of geography and history, trip planning by surveying points of interest around a destination, and casual browsing of the world’s landmarks. The workflow begins with opening the app in a browser, spinning the globe to a desired region, dropping a base point, and then exploring the surrounding places. Users can browse grouped categories, view photo galleries, read articles, and watch their Archive and timeline grow as they add more discoveries. The app supports drag, pinch, and dive gestures to navigate from orbit down to a single valley. Technically, Mundu.app is a Progressive Web App that works in modern browsers such as Chrome, Safari, and Edge. It requires no sign-up, login, or personal data. The application does not display advertisements, use analytics, or include third-party trackers. All user data, including bases, favorites, and settings, is stored locally on the device. The content is sourced entirely from the free knowledge projects Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons, with full credits available within the app. A privacy policy is provided on the website.
