Backsight is a privacy focused journaling and self tracking application that converts voice or text notes into statistical insights over time. Its primary function is to help users identify patterns in their own behavior, mood, and experiences without offering advice, coaching, or diagnoses. The app operates on the premise that individuals are poor at self assessment of their own statistics and aims to close this gap by surfacing objective data such as repetition, distribution, spikes, changes, and correlations from user generated notes. The application offers several key features. Users can record a moment via voice or text with no setup or predefined fields required. Audio recordings are transcribed entirely on device and are deleted immediately after transcription, ensuring that recordings never leave the user's device. The resulting notes are displayed on an offline dashboard that visualizes patterns over time, including sample sizes and uncertainty metrics to prevent over interpretation. Additional capabilities include end to end encrypted sync between devices using user held keys, accountless identity management, unlimited import and export of raw CSV or JSON data, and the option to run a local MCP server for connecting external agents to personal data on the user's own machine. The app avoids dark patterns such as streaks, guilt, or nagging, and keeps reminders off by default. Typical use cases involve speaking or typing a brief note immediately after an event, such as a meeting, a mood shift, or a recurring activity. Over weeks or months, the dashboard reveals patterns like which days of the week are most draining, how often certain themes are logged, or correlations between mood and energy levels. The workflow is designed to require minimal effort: the user records a moment, the app transcribes and stores it locally, and the dashboard updates automatically. There is no need to reread past entries to identify trends. Technical details include on device transcription for privacy, offline functionality for the dashboard, and end to end encryption for synced notes. The app is currently in development and is built by a single developer, Ivan Bogomolov. The free tier includes recording and the dashboard, while encrypted sync and an agent interface are planned as paid add ons. The app uses privacy respecting analytics, and no user recordings or waitlist email addresses are used for analytics purposes.
