Free open-source video editor
FilmCraft is a free, open-source non-linear video editor developed by the ArtCraft team. It is written in Rust and runs natively on macOS, Windows, and Linux. The application also compiles to WebAssembly, allowing it to function within a web browser. Its primary design is to serve as an alternative to professional video editing software, with a workflow and interface that closely resembles Adobe Premiere Pro. The editor provides a standard set of professional editing tools. Users work with a Project panel, Source and Program monitors, and a timeline that supports three-point editing with various trim modes. The keyboard shortcuts follow conventions familiar to editors transitioning from other software. FilmCraft is a clean-room implementation built from public specifications. It features native decoders for common codecs such as H.264, HEVC, ProRes, VP9, AV1, AAC, and Opus, and uses an integer timebase to maintain frame accuracy on drop-frame timelines. Its color grading capabilities include curves, color wheels, HSL secondaries, LUTs, and waveform and vectorscope displays. The application includes over 90 video effects and approximately 30 transitions, with keyframing composited on the GPU. Audio tools include EBU R128 loudness meters and a clip mixer with automation. Export options include H.264 MP4, ProRes 422 HQ, PNG sequences, and GIF. The application also supports scripting through a command line interface, a JSON channel, or an MCP server. FilmCraft is part of the ArtCraft suite, a collection of free, open-source alternatives to professional creative applications. It is suitable for learning video editing, personal projects, and users who want a familiar editing workflow without a software subscription. The developers rate the software as being in an alpha stage, approximately 56 percent ready for production work. It currently does not support importing Premiere Pro project files directly, relying instead on XML, AAF, or EDL interchange formats. There is no support for third-party plugins, and performance with very large footage can be limited as color grading and export rendering currently run on the CPU. The application is less tested on Windows and Linux compared to macOS. Users are advised to test their specific media and export requirements before relying on FilmCraft for professional client work.
