Every project has a clear owner
Sastra is an open-source project management tool designed specifically for publishing and translation teams. It organizes the work around books, articles, podcasts, and videos by assigning each stage a single owner. The platform centralizes rights records, funding targets, email communication, and chat conversations within each project. An automated assistant handles routine paperwork, while a human approves each step. Sastra does not translate or edit text; it tracks tasks and workflows, leaving the actual translation work to tools such as Word, Google Docs, Paratext, or Lectio, a translation platform for Christian publishing. The tool structures projects into stages such as rights, funding, owners, and email. Each task has one owner and a due date, and team members see their work in priority order. Notifications are sent when a task is assigned. Users can mention colleagues with @mentions, send voice messages up to ten minutes long, share files, react to messages, and pin important conversations. A standup bot asks each person three short questions and provides managers with a summary of who may need assistance. Typical use cases follow a clear workflow. For example, a book project begins with a rights record from the publisher, showing what is signed and what is still needed. Each project then has a funding target that can be met through donations, grants, or partner funding; when funding is short, a blocker is displayed, and a funding proposal can be sent from within the project. Once funding is received, the blocker clears. Owners are assigned to each task, and email communication remains attached to the project. The same stages apply to articles, podcasts, and videos, each with their own set of steps. Sastra can be self-hosted for free or used as a managed cloud service. The cloud version offers a 14-day free trial, after which pricing starts at $24 per month for up to five people, with the option to cancel at any time. A connection between Lectio and Sastra is planned; currently, each task owner marks their work as done directly in Sastra.
