The terminal you don't outgrow
YouNeeK Death Terminal is a desktop terminal application available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is built with a focus on low-level performance and AI-assisted command workflows. The application is written in the Zig programming language, uses Vulkan for rendering with a software fallback option, and is configured and extended through Lua scripting. It aims to combine efficient operation with context-aware assistance while maintaining a minimal visual interface. The terminal includes several workflow features. AI autocomplete presents ghost text suggestions based on the user's typed input, working directory, recent command history with exit codes, output, shell, and operating system. This is powered by a local Ollama model by default or any OpenAI-compatible server; secrets are redacted before any data is transmitted. A Ghost Run feature provides a read-only preview of the impact of risky commands such as rm -r, git reset --hard, or git push --force before they are executed. The Time Travel function takes a snapshot of the working directory before each command and allows the user to rewind the session to a point just before a command, with an undo option. Shared Haunting lets the user share a single pane with one other terminal over an encrypted Noise connection, initially over LAN and then falling back to a relay; the guest is read-only unless control is explicitly granted. Muscle Memory detects repeated command sequences within a project and offers them as named shortcuts that stop execution on the first failure. The terminal also supports tabbed and split pane layouts, with each pane having its own shell, scrollback, search, and AI context. New panes inherit the working directory of the active pane. From a technical standpoint, Death Terminal uses a Vulkan swapchain and SPIR-V glyph pipeline with a software fallback. Text rendering is handled by FreeType and HarfBuzz with ligatures, and a bundled JetBrains Mono font is provided. An optional retro 8x8 bitmap font is also available. SSH functionality via libssh2 is supported on Linux, with Lua profiles and integration with the user's .ssh/config. The Lua configuration system supports live reload and sandboxed plugins with memory and CPU limits and permission controls for hooks, command palette, status bar, and themes. The terminal offers smooth output under heavy log and build activity. Prebuilt nightly binaries are available for Apple Silicon and Intel, and a one-line install script builds from source using Zig 0.13. For Windows, a zip download or one-line PowerShell install is provided, supporting x64 and ARM64. Linux builds are available for x86_64 and aarch64.
